- Rūdolfs, a city physician, spends his summer in the countryside, which is where he meets Laura – a teacher and mother of two, and whose husband is in prison. Rūdolfs saves the life of Laura’s daughter, Zaiga, makes friends with her son Māris, and falls in love with Laura. Laura is then faced with the difficult and painful choice between love and family commitment.
“Lake Sonata” is a classic melodrama that was assured success due to its perfect tandem of first-time directors. In 1977 the magazine Variety (USA) wrote: “…Gunārs Cilinskis has the stature of a hero from a Greek tragedy, while the graceful movements of Astrīda Kairiša are the embodiments of a wood nymph”. This film from the golden age of Latvian cinema searches for the answer to a question that has spanned the ages – should one give in to forbidden love?
