Electronic book "Lithuanian Cross-Crafting" provides information on crosses, shrines, and wooden monuments of modern forms. Sculpture, contained in traditional and contemporary monuments and spread of crosses are presented here as well as characteristics of works of the most famous cross-crafters. Besides single crosses there are also maps of complexes of monuments (ensembles and hills of crosses). Cross-crafting is presented by texts, photographs (about 500) and video.Traditional crosses, shrines, and modern wooden monuments introduced in this electronic book are situated in homesteads, villages, cemeteries, etc. They play an important role in the landscape and life of people. Only the iconography section is supplemented with photos of some types of traditional folk sculptures from museums collections.
One of the objectives of this work was to reveal regional features of cross-crafting as well as the customs that still survive. Traditions of cross-crafting are deeply rooted in many fields of human life. They were not lost even in periods of czarist and Soviet occupation. Works of gifted cross-crafters are distinguished by high artistic value
Therefore it is not accidental that Lithuanian Cross-Crafting and its Symbolism in 2001 were proclaimed by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
This issue is devoted to ethnologists, educators, people in culture, cross-crafters, etc. Everybody interested in this field of folk culture may find some specific material. We hope that the CD "Lithuanian Cross-Crafting" will become an important medium for safeguarding and dissemination of cross-crafting traditions in society
