In Latvian operatic literature "Banuta" is considered a classic. Although Kalnins uses folk material "Banuta" is not a folk opera - it`s closer to romantic music drama. "Banuta" is the most remarkable for its dramatic content, flair and it shows the thorough understanding of the compositional techniques of opera by the composer.
