- In 1919 th U.S. media was flooded with articles about Lithuania, a country which was completely unknown to Americans at the time. This onslaught was the result of an image campaign for Lithuania led by Edward L. Bernays and Carl Robert Byoir, well-known public relations specialists hired by Lithuanian emigres.
Even though the goal of the PR campaign, to persuade the U.S. to recognize Lithuania's independence de jure, was not accomplished, it provided the first opportunity for Americans to receive a broader introduction to Lithuania and was historically considered to be the country's premier image campaign in the U.S.
